How to Make Authentic Masala Chai at Home
Masala chai is a comforting Indian tea made with milk, black tea, sugar, and aromatic spices. Its rich flavor and warming aroma make it perfect for mornings, rainy evenings, or relaxed conversations with family.
Ingredients
-
2 cups water
-
1 cup milk
-
2 teaspoons black tea leaves
-
2–3 teaspoons sugar
-
1-inch piece of ginger, crushed
-
2 green cardamom pods, crushed
-
2 cloves
-
1 small cinnamon stick
-
2 black peppercorns
Method
Add water, ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and black pepper to a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer for two to three minutes so the spices release their flavor.
Add the black tea leaves and boil for another minute. Pour in the milk and add sugar according to your taste.
Cook the chai over medium heat until it rises and becomes slightly creamy. Reduce the heat and simmer for two more minutes. Avoid boiling it for too long, as the tea may become bitter.
Strain the masala chai into cups and serve hot.
Tips for Perfect Masala Chai
Use fresh ginger and freshly crushed spices for the best aroma. Strong black tea, such as Assam tea, gives masala chai its traditional color and bold taste.
For stronger chai, add a little more tea or simmer it longer. For a creamier version, increase the milk. You can also add fennel seeds, nutmeg, or star anise for a different flavor.
Authentic masala chai is all about balance. The tea should be strong, the milk creamy, the spices fragrant, and the sweetness just right. Once you find your preferred combination, homemade masala chai can easily become part of your daily routine.
